Kamala Harris
Kamala Devi Harris born October 20, 1964) is an American politician and lawyer who is currently the 49th vice president of the United States. She is both the first female vice president and the highest ranking female official in the United America. A part of the Democratic Party, she previously was the attorney general of California between 2011 and 2017 and also as the state's attorney general from 2011 to 2017 and as a United States senator representing California between 2017 and 2021. Harris was born in Oakland, California. She graduated from Howard University as well as the University of California Hastings College of the Law. Her career began in the Alameda County District Attorney's Office. Harris was later recruited to join the San Francisco District Attorney's Office. In 2003, she was elected San Francisco District Attorney. She was elected Attorney general of California in 2010. In 2014, she was elected to a second term. Harris served as the junior United States senator from California from 2017 to 2021. Harris beat Loretta Martinez in 2016's Senate election to become the second African American woman and first South Asian American senator to be elected to the United States Senate. As senator, she fought for reforms to healthcare, federal de-scheduling of cannabis, a pathway towards citizenship for immigrants without a legal status and the DREAM Act, a ban on assault weapons, as well as progressive tax reform. The sharp questions she asked Trump officials during Senate hearings earned the attention of the nation, including the second Supreme Court nominee, Brett Kavanaugh, who was charged with sexual assault.
